Is Focus Worth Using?
Focus is the most misunderstood resource in Albion Online. It is almost always profitable - but “profitable” is not the same as “the best use of it”.
Quick answer
Yes, usually - focus lifts the resource return rate from 15.25% to 43.5% (or 36.7% to 53.9% in a bonus city), which returns a large share of your inputs per craft. But focus regenerates slowly and caps at 30,000 (with Premium improving regen), so the real question is which activity deserves it. Judge every focus sink by extra profit per focus point - every AlbionForge calculator reports it.
What focus actually does
Using focus on a craft adds +59 production-bonus points. Combined with the city base (+18) and the refining bonus (+40), return rates climb steeply:
| Location & mode | Bonus | Return rate | Effective input cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bonus city, no focus | 58 | 36.7% | 63.3% |
| Bonus city, with focus | 117 | 53.9% | 46.1% |
Return-rate formula (bonus ÷ (100 + bonus)) per Albion Free Market's analysis. Values last verified October 2026.
Worked example: T5 bars in Thetford
100× T5 bars, ore at 480, T4 bars at 1,100, selling at 4,200, no Premium, instant sell. Base focus cost for a T5 refine: 94.
| No focus | With focus | |
|---|---|---|
| Return rate | 36.7% | 53.9% |
| Net material cost | 160,782 | 117,094 |
| Revenue after tax | 403,200 | 403,200 |
| Net profit | 242,418 | 286,106 |
| Extra profit from focus | - | +43,688 |
| Focus spent (100 × 94) | 0 | 9,400 |
| Extra profit per focus | - | ≈ 4.65 silver |
4.65 silver per focus is a strong rate for low-effort refining. Now compare: if your T6 refining - or a spec'd crafting line - earns 8 silver per focus, spend it there. That single comparison is the whole decision. Run your own numbers in the refining calculator.
Specialization makes focus cheaper - fast
Focus cost follows a halving curve against your focus-efficiency rating:
Every 10,000 efficiency halves the cost: a T4 broadsword costs 1,286 focus at zero spec but about 150 at full spec - and a T8 refine drops from 503 base toward double digits. Higher spec means the same profit per craft divided by a fraction of the focus, so profit per focus explodes with specialization. Low-spec crafters get the worst of both worlds; spec one line before dumping focus into it.

Rules of thumb
- Compare per focus, not per craft. The calculator's profit-per-focus figure (using the no-focus world as the baseline) is the honest metric.
- Bonus city first, focus second. The city bonus is free; add focus on top of it, not instead of it.
- High tiers love focus. T8 refines cost 503 base focus but the material savings scale with tier prices.
- Don't craft without it if you can wait. Focus regen is slow, but there is no reason to spend materials at a 36.7% return when a 53.9% batch is hours away.
