How the City Bonus Works

The single biggest lever on refining and crafting profit in Albion Online is simply being in the right city. Here is exactly what the bonus does, and what it is worth.

Every royal city specialises in one resource

Each of the five royal cities gives a boosted resource return rate when you refine the resource of its surrounding biome. Refine that resource anywhere else and you only get the base return rate. The bonus applies automatically at the city's refineries - there is nothing to activate.

The return rate formula

Return rates are not arbitrary numbers - they come from one formula. The game adds up production bonus points from every source that applies, then converts them into a return rate:

return rate = bonus ÷ (100 + bonus)

The bonus points stack additively:

SourceBonus points
Any royal city (base)+18
Refining the city's specialised resource+40
Crafting the city's specialised lines+15
Using focus+59

Which produces the familiar numbers:

What that means in silver

At a 36.7 % return rate you effectively pay 63.3 % of the recipe's listed material cost. On a Tier 8 refine that routinely saves hundreds of thousands of silver per full stack - which is why experienced refiners haul raw material to the bonus city rather than refining where they gathered. The refining calculator lets you price both sides of that decision.

For crafting, note the bonus is smaller (+15, giving 24.8 %), but it applies to every input - including artifacts and runes/souls/relics on enchanted recipes - so bonus-city crafting of artifact gear is standard practice. Price it in the crafting calculator.

Common mistakes

  • Refining on an island - no royal base bonus (and no specialisation bonus). Convenient, but you pay full recipe price.
  • Ignoring the return's value - returns arrive as materials, not silver. They only become profit once you re-use or sell them; the calculator's “sell returns” mode prices that honestly.
  • Forgetting specialization affects focus, not returns - your return rate is fixed by location and focus; higher spec only cuts focus cost per craft.
